There’s a number everyone quotes. The global e-commerce average in 2026 stands at 2.74%. So you check your dashboard, compare, and feel good or bad about the result.
That feeling is worth nothing. Here’s why, and what to compare instead.
The average hides a 7x spread
Beauty and personal care stores convert at 5.37% on average. Food and beverage: 5.03%. Luxury and jewelry: 0.71%.
That’s a spread of more than 7x between industries. A jewelry store converting at 1.2% is beating its market. A beauty store sitting exactly on the “good” global average of 2.74% is leaving half its potential revenue on the table.
Comparing your store to the global average is comparing yourself to a market you are not in. Find your industry’s benchmark. That’s your starting line.
The mobile excuse died this year
For years the story was: “mobile users just browse, real buying happens on desktop.” It was a comfortable excuse for a weak mobile experience.
The 2026 numbers ended it. Mobile now converts at 2.86% on average, ahead of desktop at 2.46%. And mobile carries 85.9% of all ecommerce traffic.
Read that again: the device that brings almost all of your visitors now converts better than desktop for the average store.
So if your mobile converts worse than your desktop, that is no longer “how users behave.” That is a defect in your store. Usually it’s one of three things: a checkout form that is painful to fill on a phone, an add to cart button that disappears on scroll, or a popup that eats half the screen.
The cheapest win is at the end of the funnel
Average cart abandonment sits at 70.22%. Seven out of ten shoppers who added a product walk away.
When numbers are weak, most owners buy more traffic or redesign the homepage. The math points the other way: one-click checkout lifts conversion by 10 to 20%. Turn on the express options your buyers already carry, whether it’s Shop Pay on Shopify, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or PayPal One Touch. Shop Pay alone shows up to 50% higher checkout conversion.
These are people who already chose a product. You already paid to bring them in. Fixing the last three screens of your store is cheaper than any campaign.
Three numbers to pull this week
- Your industry’s benchmark, not the global one.
- Your mobile conversion vs your desktop conversion. If mobile is lower, that is your first priority.
- Your checkout abandonment rate.
The global average is trivia. The gap between your mobile and your desktop is a to-do list.
